Valentine's Day Heart Project: The week of February 14-17, we will be participating in lots of fun Valentine’s Day activities in preschool and discussing friendship. In lieu of a party, we are asking for students and their families to create one big valentine using a construction paper heart that I sent home in your child's folder this week. You can use glitter, stickers, paint, yarn, pasta, crayons, or any other materials around your house to decorate your heart. Upon completion, please return your “Class Valentine” to school so that we may share it with the class and display it for our school community in our classroom windows.
Valentines: Sending in valentines for the class is optional. Although we will not have an official time to pass out valentines, students may bring them in to pass out during free choice time if they'd like. We have 16 students in our morning class and 8 students in our afternoon class. If you choose to send in valentines, please address the valentines "To My Friend" so that our preschoolers may be more independent in passing them out.
Scholastic Book Orders: You can shop the February Scholastic Book order by visiting our classroom homepage. February book orders are due by Friday, February 18. Enter the promo code READS at checkout to receive a free $5 book with a $25 purchase.
Preschool Progress Reports/Conferences: Preschool progress notes were sent home in your child's folder this week. If after reviewing your child's progress reports you have any questions, concerns or questions about placement for next year, please sign-up for a ten minute virtual conference on either Tuesday (2/15) or Thursday (2/17) here. I will send out conference confirmations with a link to meet via Google Meet at a later date. Ms. Carly and I will schedule ECSE conferences together for a different date.
Mid-Winter Break: WECC will be closed on Friday, February 18th and Monday, February 21st for Mid-Winter Break.
Spring Break: There will be no preschool classes Friday, April 1st through Friday, April 8th for Spring Break. Childcare will be available the week of April 4th for families enrolled in the childcare program.
T/Th 3's Class:
This week, we kicked off our Community Helpers unit by learning about health helpers, with a focus on the dentist! February is National Children's Dental Health Month so we learned many ways we can keep our mouths healthy, including brushing our teeth, flossing, visiting the dentist, and eating healthy foods! We sequenced the steps to brushing our teeth and sorted foods and drinks that are good/bad for our teeth. We also discussed what to expect when visiting the dentist and the important job dentists have in keeping us healthy! During center time, we read about community helpers, practiced using scissors, played in our classroom dentist office, explored dentist tools with playdough, and painted teeth with toothbrushes! We learned about the letter O this week and turned our handprints into an Octopus for our letter books. We also enjoyed a visit from Ms. Janet where we continue to learn about forte (loud) and piano (quiet). We were sad to say goodbye to Ms. Bea, but we're looking forward to seeing Ms. Carly on Monday! Next week, we will continue our exploration of community helpers by learning about safety helpers. Here are some picture highlights from our week in 3's:
PM 5's Class:
February is Children's Dental Health Month, so this week we learned all about how to take care of our teeth! We discussed healthy habits like brushing two times a day, flossing, eating healthy foods and visiting the dentist. We compared eggs and teeth (they both have a hard shell to protect the insides), then soaked an egg in both water and soda. We discovered that we were unable to fully clean the egg soaked in soda and that the soda started to break down the hard shell! We sorted foods that are healthy and unhealthy for our teeth, and learned the parts of a tooth. We learned that kids have twenty primary teeth, and we've been working on recognizing numbers 1-20. We played a fun roll and dot game to help practice recognizing different quantities and numerals. On Wednesday, we enjoyed music with Ms. Janet! With Ms. Janet, we've been learning about beats and rests, and we practiced writing and making our own music using beats and rests. Next week, we will begin our transportation unit! Here are some picture highlights of our week in 5's:
