Important Dates/Reminders
MWF 3's Class:
This week, we concluded our community helpers unit by learning about builders and fixers in our community! We specifically learned about construction workers, carpenters, mechanics, and plumbers. We learned about specific tools that builders and fixers use and sang a song to act out using the tools to build a house. During centers, we made our own tool belts, built letters out of wood sticks, practiced counting by hammering in "nails," sorted tools from other objects, constructed dump trucks, built number towers, and completed construction patterns. We enjoyed building communities with community building blocks and playing with construction trucks in the sand table. We read the story Little Blue Truck and discussed how to ask for help and how to respond when asked for help. We also learned about the letter S and turned our handprints into spiders! We also planted peppers, tomatoes, onions, and other herbs in our tower garden. We're hoping to be able to harvest our crops and make salsa together by the end of the year! PM 5's Class:
This week, we learned about the five important food groups (fruit, vegetables, dairy, protein, and grains) and read lots of fun books related to food. On Monday, we read Dragons Love Tacos and discussed how tacos include foods from all five food groups. We planted tomatoes, onions, peppers, and other herbs in order to grow our own salsa garden in our classroom tower garden! On Tuesday, we introduced our classroom restaurant and read the book Calm at a Restaurant to discuss table manners. On Wednesday, we read My Food, Your Food, Our Food and discussed both cultural differences and personal preferences related to food. We also discussed the importance of making healthy food choices in giving our bodies energy and helping us grow. We learned about the letters W and X, and added a walrus and xylophone to our letter books! This week, we also began our newly adopted Second Steps social-emotional curriculum. We reviewed whole body listening expectations and played listening games to practice our listening skills. Whole body listening expectations include eyes are watching, ears are listening, voice is quiet, and body is calm. We read My Mouth is a Volcano and learned strategies to help with interrupting. Next week, we will learn about the letters Y and Z and learn all about colors and rainbows! Here are some picture highlights of our week in 5's:
