12/18 Classroom Update

Important Dates/Reminders:

Warm Clothing: As it gets colder, please send your child with warm clothing for outside time each day. Many items look similar, so please label your child's coat, boots, hat, and gloves/mittens. We go outside daily as long as it is not raining and the wind chill is above zero. If there is snow in the forecast or on the ground, please also send your child with snow pants as well.

Winter Break: There will be no preschool classes starting Monday, December 21 through Friday, January 1. School will resume on Monday, January 4th.

T/Th 3's Class:

This week, we read the story Snowmen at Night  and engaged in lots of winter learning fun! We painted melted snowmen with special "snow" paint and came up with our own theories about what happened to our snowmen. We also learned about the letter I and turned our handprints into ice cream cones. During center time, we really enjoyed exploring our "snow" sensory bin. We're looking forward to having real snow to play in! We also learned that patterns are things that repeat themselves, and practiced finishing snowmen patterns. On Thursday, we sang lots of winter songs and holiday classics with Ms. Janet. We also had a lot of fun "ice skating" around our classroom and baking in our classroom cookie shop! Be sure to check your child's backpack for some fun holiday surprises! Here are some picture highlights from our week in 3's:

PM 5's Class:

This week in 5's, we read several versions of the classic story The Gingerbread Man. During circle time, we explored a ginger root and ginger spice, and learned how the root is turned into the spice. We also practiced retelling stories and learned the steps to making a gingerbread man. During center time, we worked on reading/identifying sight words in our Gingerbread Man mini-readers and you can read/practice this at home too. We also had so much fun playing a gingerbread addition game - there were squeals of laughter during! We enjoyed making gingerbread men and houses with gingerbread play dough, and acted out the story of The Gingerbread Baby with the characters in our "snow" tub. We also matched gingerbread babies to their gingerbread houses based on their beginning sounds. The highlight of the week was decorating and eating our gingerbread men! Be sure to check your child's backpack/folder for some fun holiday surprises! T/Th 3's Class:

This week, we continued to read different versions of The Gingerbread Man and engaged in many more fun gingerbread themed learning experiences. During circle time, we learned and acted out the rhyme Five Yummy Gingerbread. We also sorted words based on their beginning sounds and listened for rhyming words. We also sequenced the steps to make a gingerbread man before decorating our own gingerbread men. This week, we focused on the letter K, identified items that start with K, and learned the ASL sign for K. During centers, we created gingerbread houses for our gingerbread babies, turned our handprints into kites for our letter books, sorted gingerbread men by size, made gingerbread counting stew, and played a gingerbread board game! During free choice, we also had fun completing gingerbread mazes, playing in our classroom cookie shop, making gingerbread cookies with gingerbread playdough, and acting out the story of The Gingerbread Man in the dollhouse. PM 5's Class:

This week in 5's, our theme was winter! We learned how to say the four seasons in Spanish, and discussed changes in weather, activities, and clothing in the wintertime. So far we've been really lucky (or unlucky depending on how you feel about snow!) with our winter weather. In order to prepare for snow, we learned a song to help us learn the proper order to get ready to get dressed for the snow - (snow pants, boots, coat, hat & mittens) and have been working on getting ourselves dressed for outside independently. During center time, we practiced cutting by making coffee filter snowflakes, we identified the beginning sounds in words, played in "snow," practiced writing the letter J, and built playdough snowmen, and built snowflakes with pattern blocks while discussing symmetry. We read both Snowmen at Night and Sneezy the Snowman, then we painted our own melting snowmen and wrote about why the melted. We also continued to work on retelling stories by thinking about the major characters and events in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Have a great weekend!
