4/30 Classroom Update

Important Dates/Reminders:

New Mask Policy: Our friends have been doing a great job wearing and keeping track of their masks in class! Please label your child's mask with their name/initials and consider attaching their mask to a lanyard to help avoid loss and mix-ups. Please consider sending more than one mask as they can sometimes get wet, dirty, etc. We understand this may be a big adjustment for many of our friends, and we will do our best to support them with this big change and provide mask breaks if needed.

Hearing/Vision Screenings: The Kent County Health Department was here this past week conducting Hearing and Vision Screenings. If your child was absent and missed the screenings, you can schedule a free appointment to have it done at the Health Department by calling 616-632-7047. I sent home the results in your child's folder yesterday. Please save this blue paper in a safe place as you will need to submit it with kindergarten enrollment paperwork.

Camp East Registration: If you are interested in having your child attend Camp East this summer, registration is now open. Please see go here for more information on Camp East, the fun experiences/field trips offered, and the link to register.

Memorial Day: WECC will be closed Monday, May 31st in observance of Memorial Day.

Last Day of School: The last day of school for both T/Th 3's and PM 5's will be Thursday, June 3rd.

T/Th 3's Class:

This week, we began our exploration of caterpillars and butterflies! We met our class caterpillars, and we will continue to observe as they grow and change into butterflies. We read the classic story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and practiced retelling a story. We also sequenced the life cycle of a butterfly and learned about each of the different stages. During center time, we drew caterpillar observations/predictions, recreated the butterfly life cycle with pasta, and made name caterpillars. We also enjoyed playing in a garden kinetic sand sensory tub and enjoying the nice weather outside with chalk and bubbles! Next week we will continue to learn more about butterflies and insects!  PM 5's Class:

This week, we learned about living things! We learned that living things need food, air, and water. They also grow, move, and reproduce. We practiced sorting living versus nonliving things both at circle time and in small groups. We began our exploration of plants by learning about what plants need to grow, the life cycle of a plant,  the different parts of a plant, and what role each part plays. We learned the steps to planting seeds, drew funny faces on cups and planted grass seed to make our own silly grass heads. We will continue to watch our seeds grow over the next couple of weeks! On Thursday, we learned why bees are so important to plants and had fun with some silly bee songs and rhymes! We also learned about the -it word family and practiced reading, stamping, and writing words in the -it word family. Next week, we will continue our exploration of living things and life cycles by learning about caterpillars and butterflies, and we will also learn about the -ig word family!
