4/27 Classroom Update

Important Dates/Reminders

Hearing/Vision Screenings: The Kent County Health Department will be at WECC next week on Monday and Tuesday to conduct vision and hearing screenings. I will send home the results in your child's folder following the screenings. You will want to keep the results in a safe place to submit as part of your child's kindergarten enrollment paperwork.

Scholastic Book Order: This week, I sent home Scholastic book order fliers in your child's folder for our final book order of the school year. This is a great opportunity to add books to your collection at home while also earning points to add more books to our classroom library. With a $25 order, you can pick a free $5 book with the code READS.
No School 5/29: There are no preschool classes on Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day.

Last Day of School: The last day of school for PM classes is Thursday, June 1st, and the last day of school for AM classes is Friday, June 2nd. There will be more information about end of the year celebrations and special activities to come!

MWF 3's Class:

This week we began our exploration of caterpillars and butterflies! We continued to observe our class caterpillars and were so excited to see how much they have grown already. We read the classic story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and practiced retelling the story. We really enjoyed acting out the story with felt pieces! We also sequenced the life cycle of a butterfly, learned about each of the different stages, and acted out the life cycle with a butterfly dance. During center time, we drew caterpillar observations in our caterpillar journals, arranged the butterfly life cycle in order, explored various life cycle manipulatives and crafted name caterpillars. We also enjoyed playing in a garden sensory tub, lacing butterflies, and strengthening our fine motor muscles by hole punching foods from The Very Hungry CaterpillarThis week, we also learned about the letter Z and painted our hands to look like zebras for our letter books! During our Second Steps lessons this week, we focused on learning how to follow directions, including practicing repeating directions. Next week we will continue to learn more about butterflies and insects and work to complete our year-long letter book projects. PM 5's Class:

This week, we learned about living things and what classifies something as a living thing. We learned that living things need food, air, and water. They also grow, can move, and reproduce. We practiced sorting living versus nonliving things both at circle time and in small groups. We began our exploration of plants by learning about what plants need to grow, the life cycle of a plant, the different parts of a plant, and what role each part plays. We learned the steps to planting seeds and planted grass seeds. We will continue to watch our seeds grow over the next couple of weeks! On Thursday, we learned why bees are so important to plants and had fun with some silly bee songs and rhymes! We created some 3-D bee art and solved addition problems up to 10. We also learned about the -it word family and practiced reading, stamping, and writing words in the -it word family. This week's Second Steps lessons focused on the importance of following directions, and we read Strega Nona to illustrate just why it can be so important to follow directions. Next week, we will continue our exploration of living things and life cycles by learning about caterpillars and butterflies, and we will also learn about the -ig word family!
