12/10 Classroom Update

Important Dates/Reminders:

Warm Clothing: As it gets colder, please send your child with warm clothing for outside time each day. Many items look similar, so please label your child's coat, boots, hat, and gloves/mittens. We go outside daily as long as it is not raining and the wind chill is above zero. If there is snow in the forecast or on the ground, please also send your child with snow pants as well.

Pajama Day: Thursday, December 16th is Pajama Day at WECC!

Winter Break: There will be no preschool classes starting Friday, December 17 through Friday, December 31. School will resume on Monday, January 3rd.

T/Th 3's Class:

This week, we continued to read different versions of The Gingerbread Man and engaged in many more fun gingerbread themed learning experiences. During circle time, we explored a real ginger root and talked about some of the ingredients in gingerbreadWe also sorted words based on their beginning sounds and listened for rhyming words. We sequenced the steps to make a gingerbread man before decorating our own gingerbread men. We loved getting to eat them at snack time on Friday! This week, we focused on the letter K, identified items that start with K, and learned the ASL sign for K. During centers, we created gingerbread houses for our gingerbread babies, turned our handprints into kites for our letter books, sorted and matched letters, counted and built numbers, sequenced the story of The Gingerbread Baby, and acted out the story of The Gingerbread Baby in our sensory play snow tub. We also had lots of fun baking up sweet treats in our classroom cookie shop! Here are some picture highlights from our week in 3's:

PM 5's Class:

This week in 5's, our theme was winter! We learned how to say the four seasons in Spanish, and discussed changes in weather, activities, and clothing in the wintertime. In order to prepare for snowy days, we learned a song to help us learn the proper order to get ready to get dressed for the snow - (snow pants, boots, coat, hat & mittens) and have been working on getting ourselves dressed for outside independently. We also learned all about snow, including how snowflakes form. We conducted an experiment to see what would melt ice faster: sugar or salt. We all agreed that salt was much more effective! During center time, we practiced cutting by making coffee filter snowflakes, we identified the beginning sounds in words, played in play sensory "snow," practiced writing the letter J, and built playdough snowmen, and constructed snowflakes with pattern blocks while discussing symmetry. We read both Snowmen at Night and Sneezy the Snowman, then we painted our own melting snowmen and wrote about why the melted. We also continued to work on retelling stories by thinking about the major characters and events in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Have a great weekend!
