4/15 Classroom Update

Important Dates/Reminders:

Community Earth Day Celebration:

Hearing/Vision Screenings: The Kent County Health Department will be at WECC the first week in May to conduct vision and hearing screenings. I will send home the results in your child's folder following the screenings. You will want to keep the results in a safe place to submit as part of your child's kindergarten enrollment paperwork.

Camp East Registration: Camp East Registration is now open! Camp East runs from June 13th until August 12th from 7:00 am - 5:30 pm. Any Camp East registration questions should be directed to Courtney Richards by calling the WECC office at 235-7595 or by emailing crichards@egrps.org. Below are the weekly themes and experiences planned:

Memorial Day: WECC is closed on Monday, May 30th for Memorial Day. There are no preschool classes or childcare that day.

Last Day of School: The last day of school for afternoon preschool classes is Thursday, June 2, and the last day of school for morning preschool classes is Friday, June 3.

MWF 3's Class:

This week, we continued our exploration of plants and how they grow! On Monday, we learned the steps to plant a seed and planted some grass seed! We will continue to care for them and watch them grow in our classroom over the next few weeks. We learned about the life cycle of a plant/flower and the important role that bees have. We had lots of fun singing songs like "I'm Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee" and "Here is the Beehive." During center time, we painted colorful flowers using potatoes, acted out pollination, built flower garden, reviewed springtime colors, and explored a bee themed playdough kit. We also learned about the letter X and turned our handprints into x-ray pictures for our letter books! Next week, we will celebrate Earth day, learn about how to take care of our planet, and learn about the letter Y. PM 5's Class:

This week, we learned about spring and signs of spring in Michigan! On Monday, we took a nature walk around school to look for signs of spring and found a bird's nest in the gutter by Ms. Suzie's room! We discussed the many types of weather we can have during spring, learned about the water cycle and acted out different types of weather with a parachute. We learned about different spring events in Michigan like Tulip Time in Holland and the butterflies at Meijer Gardens. During center time, we painted tulips with forks, matched upper and lowercase letters with puzzles and a butterfly game, read about Spring together, went on sight word hunts, "planted" flowers based on their beginning sound and painted colorful spring flowers with recycled bottles. We also learned about the -an word family and built -an word family words with playdough. As we prepare for kindergarten next year, we will be working on lots of different social skills in the coming weeks. This week, we had lots of fun being silly and practicing when it is appropriate or not to be silly. Next week, we will learn about the -ap word family, learn about how to take care of our planet for Earth Day, and discuss personal space and space invaders!
