5/5 Classroom Update

Important Dates/Reminders

Hearing/Vision Screenings: Hearing and Vision screenings were conducted this past week on Monday and Wednesday. I will send home the results in your child's folder when I receive them. You will want to keep the results in a safe place to submit as part of your child's kindergarten enrollment paperwork.

Scholastic Book Order: Last week, I sent home Scholastic book order fliers in your child's folder for our final book order of the school year. This is a great opportunity to add books to your collection at home while also earning points to add more books to our classroom library. With a $25 order, you can pick a free $5 book with the code READS.
No School 5/29: There are no preschool classes on Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day.

Last Day of School: The last day of school for PM classes is Thursday, June 1st, and the last day of school for AM classes is Friday, June 2nd. There will be more information about end of the year celebrations and special activities to come!

MWF 3's Class:

This week, we continued our exploration of insects and butterflies! We continued to watch our "caterpillars" grow and were excited to find that now they are inside chrysalides! We have been documenting their growth in our butterfly journals, and we can't wait to see what happens next! We learned the parts of an insect and butterfly, and can sing a fun song to the tune of Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes to help us remember the important attributes called "Head, Thorax, Abdomen (and Sometimes Wings!)." On Friday, we talked about Mother's Day coming up on May 14th and read a story called What Not to Give Your Mother for Mother's Day. We thought about things our own mommies would like and prepared some special art projects for them to thank them for all they do for us! Our Second Steps focus skill this week was asking for what we need and want. We learned how to ask for help using a strong, respectful voice and practiced in the classroom. On Friday, we had so much fun learning about outer space with Ms. Lori during music class. While dancing and singing, we pretended to fly through space on a rocket ship and orbit around the sun like planets! Here are some picture highlights of our week in 3's:

PM 5's Class:

This week, we learned about insects with a focus on the life cycle of a butterfly! We began observing baby caterpillars and will continue to record our observations in our butterfly life cycle journals. We learned what makes an insect and sorted insects by attributes.  We read the classic story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and practiced retelling the story with a beginning, middle, and end. We also thought about what foods we would have the hungry caterpillar eat if we wrote the book! We learned about symmetry and that butterflies are symmetrical. We matched butterfly puzzles and tried to draw our own symmetrical butterflies during center time. We also discussed Mother's Day coming up on May 14th and painted a special surprise for our moms to recognize them for all they do for us! For word work, we focused on the -ig word family, and we will learn about the -ip word family next week. Our Second Steps lessons this week focused on the importance of asking for help as we are learning. We learned how to ask for help with a strong, respectful voice and practiced with various role plays in the classroom. On Thursday, we had so much fun traveling through space with Ms. Lori during music. We loved acting out orbiting the sun and learning about all the planets through song. Next week, we will learn about farms and our superhero power: the power to choose! Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!
